General Plan Update
NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ELEMENT

A healthy local economy is an essential component of a livable community. The County has a compelling interest in promoting economic development that will benefit the region and our local jurisdiction and remain within the context of the principles attributed to the General Plan.

The Economic Development function provides the County with the opportunity to ensure quality of life, job growth that maintains pace with housing prices and adequate levels of public services. The proposed Economic Development Element will set forth policies consistent with the aforementioned ideals. In addition, the element will consolidate and codify policy concerning the economic and fiscal viability of Sacramento County .

The strategic objectives of the Economic Development Element are outlined below. These will define the framework for the element and spawn many of the specific policies:

  • Intensify Business Attraction, Retention and Development
The Department has attempted to target and attract industries and businesses that would contribute to the diversification and stabilization of the local economy. The ultimate goal involves encouraging a mix of large and small businesses with a significant numbers of jobs and substantial public revenues.
  • Redevelopment of Mather and McClellan
The Department continues to facilitate the efficient reuse of Mather Field and McClellan Park to a mixture of public and private uses that promotes both as job centers for the region, maintains the facilities for viable air transportation related uses, and enhances the local and regional economies.
  • Increase Sports Attraction and Tourism
The Department works in cooperation with several entities to attract and develop professional and amateur sporting events in the Capital Region. Strategic partners include the Sacramento Sports Commission and the Sacramento Sports Education Foundation.
  • Act as a Catalyst for Commercial Corridor Redevelopment
The new development and revitalization potential in the existing corridors is a strategic asset that can be utilized to improve community quality of life, balance land uses, and increase the tax base. The Department continues to support the revitalization of the existing Commercial Corridors through partnerships with business associations, Business Improvement Districts and businesses retention and attraction efforts.
  • Attract Key Regional Sales Tax Generators
The strategic plan will propose proactive approach to identify opportunity sites and key partnering groups, including the real estate community and SACTO that will help market available opportunities.
