An update of the Cordova Community Plan (adopted
in 1978) was authorized by the Sacramento County
Board of Supervisors on May 19, 1999. The Planning
Department has been designated as the lead agency
for this project. Planning staff assigned to the
project include Jeff Gamel (Senior Planner and
project manager).

Early in this planning process, Planning staff developed a Web page specifically for the Cordova Community Plan update (linked to the Planning Department's Web page), the primary purpose of which was to "inform the public" of the update process. Planning staff also developed a questionnaire intended to provide some basic issue identification. The Cordova questionnaire was available from November 1999 to March 2000. It could be completed and submitted on-line through the Planning Department's Web page, and was also available at several locations within the community. Planning staff received approximately 400 completed questionnaires, from both the on-line Web page and those that were delivered through the mail.

In early 2000, Planning staff contacted numerous community interest groups and organizations, representatives of many of the larger businesses south of Highway 50, and individuals active in community affairs to familiarize them with the community plan update. These contacts amount to several hundred, and staff maintains frequent communication on the update by newsletters, meeting minutes and notices of upcoming workshops through regular e-mail correspondence. Planning staff also regularly attends many of the monthly meetings of these various community interest groups to update they as to the progress on this planning process, share information, and to solicit their support as well as assistance. Many of these community interest groups are themselves working on various plans to improve the appearance of major arterials or to encourage redevelopment of commercial areas (e.g., the Committee for the Cordova Commercial Revitalization Project is attempting to improve the Folsom Boulevard corridor). The common goal is to improve the quality of life and image of the Cordova community planning area.
